The 2012 Alfred O. Heath Distinguished Speaker Series
"A Symposium on the Life of Edward Wilmot Blyden" Thursday, March 22nd, 2012 - Reichhold Center for the Arts (St. Thomas), 6–8PM
Friday, March 23rd, 2012 - The Great Hall, UVI (St. Croix), 6–8PM
Historians and family members will discuss the fascinating life and work of one of the Virgin Islands most distinguished citizens, Mr. Edward Wilmot Blyden. Mr. Blyden was born in St. Thomas, Danish West Indies in 1832. His public speaking, sermons, and published writings were considered the most unique work of the 19th century regarding African contributions to world development. The ideas of Blyden influenced intellectual growth and change in the areas of religion and education in Sierra Leone, Lagos Nigeria, and Liberia. Through the mid-20th century, Blyden’s works were the only widespread materials that addressed African issues, and laid a blueprint for African race consciousness in West Africa, grappling with issues of independence from British and Europeans colonialism. The St. Thomas native lived and worked in Sierra Leone and Liberia from the mid 1870s to 1912 when he died in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
UVI’s Alfred O. Heath Distinguished Speaker series is an annual event during Charter Week that offers the public a setting in which to hear nationally and internationally recognized individuals discuss issues related to the Virgin Islands community. In addition, it is the University’s way of recognizing and celebrating the outstanding person and accomplished citizen that is Dr. Alfred O. Heath.
