The Reichhold Center for the Arts begins its 32nd season of entertainment with “Rhythmic Circus,” a high-energy concert combining tap dance, live music and comedy.

“Rhythmic Circus” performs Friday, October 8, 2010, at Island Center for the Performing Arts on St. Croix. The show continues on St. Thomas, Saturday, October 9, 2010 at Reichhold Center for the Arts. Both shows start at 7 p.m.

“We are excited to premiere our 32nd season with a Family Series show,” says Reichhold Center Co-Director Pamela Toussaint. “This is an event the entire family can enjoy together. And we’ve made sure the ticket prices are very affordable.”

“Rhythmic Circus” has taken the dance world by storm with their innovative repertoire, transforming tap shoes into instruments of rhythm. Their groundbreaking production, Feet Don’t Fail Me Now! features acclaimed tap dancers accompanied by a seven-piece band.

Critics have hailed the show as “Flat out Amazing” “funky,” “Edgy,” and “Explosive.”

The group was formed in 2007 by dancers and friends who had been collectively choreographing and performing for seven years.

Their current production, Feet Don’t Fail Me Now!, premiered in August of 2008 at the Ritz Theatre in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The group’s dancers and founders Nick Bowman, Ricci Milan, Kaleena Miller and Eddie Strachan joined forces with Twin Cities’ heavyweight musicians Alex Rossi, Cornell Blanchard, Patrick Nelson, Dan Ristrom, Jason Marks, Elliot Blaufuss and Aaron “Heatbox” Heaton to integrate an inventive style of rapid-fire tap with a wide variety of musical genres. This captivating blend resulted in a novel music and dance experience that appeals to audiences of all ages. The dancers showcase fancy tap footwork on everything from sand to folding chairs. In one number, the dancers use the technology of electric drum triggers to change the sound of their taps. Elaborate costume changes mixed with comedy routines make for a night of all-around fun.

Dancers are accompanied by a 7-piece band that plays a wide array of music from Minneapolis funk to salsa.

The Varsity Theatre in Minneapolis, Minnesota, presented Feet Don’t Fail Me Now! in January of 2009. The sold out performance garnered this review:

The dancers have limbs and torsos seemingly
suspended by marionette strings, and feet
that bounced as though on springs!”

Rhythmic Circus recently opened for Savion Glover’s Bare Soundz and collaborated with Vocal Essence in Witness: A Tribute to Duke Ellington at the Ordway Performing Arts Center.

Rhythmic Circus is sponsored by the Virgin Islands Department of Education. The Virgin Islands Council on the Arts assisted in planning educational workshops during which students interacted with members of Rhythmic Circus.
