In tribute to one of the greatest musicians and leaders in the struggle for human rights, Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. has proclaimed “Hugh Masekela Day” on Friday, March 18th on St. Croix and Saturday, March 19th on St. Thomas.

The dates coincide with Mr. Masekela’s scheduled concerts on Friday at Island Center for the Performing Arts and Saturday at Reichhold Center for the Arts.

Gov. de Jongh wrote in his proclamation, “In honor of this great musician and human and civil rights activist I call on all residents and community organizations to join with me in this observance.”

The proclamation notes Mr. Masekela’s music expressing the struggles and hardships of South Africans, as well has his 30 years spent in exile for his role in the anti-apartheid movement.  The governor also hails Mr. Masekela’s legendary status as a jazz trumpeter.

Reichhold Center Marketing Manager Karen Gutloff, said of the proclamation, “We are very excited our government has recognized the stature of Mr. Masekela. What better way to observe his achievements than by participating in the concerts on both St. Croix and St. Thomas.  The music is a great unifier for our community.”

Prior to his concerts, Mr. Masekela will deliver a lecture to the public discussing his work as an activist and how his music raised international awareness of apartheid.  The lecture--open and free--to the public, takes place Thursday, March 17 at 6 p.m. on the University of the Virgin Islands St.Croix Campus in the Great Hall.  The lecture will be videolinked to the St. Thomas campus in the Administration Conference Center, rooms 142 1B and 146 1A.

Masekela will perform in concert, along with Lira, South Africa’s mega-selling vocalist. The two performed together during the 2010 World Cup Kick Off concert.

Tickets to the concert are available on St. Croix at Riddims, Urban Threadz, Undercover Books, and UVI Bookstore.  On St. Thomas tickets are available at Urban Threadz, VI Bridal and Tuxedo, Home Again, Essentric Shoe Boutique and the UVI Bookstore. Reichhold box office: (340) 693-1559.  Online at www.reichholdcenter.com.
