A dozen youngsters from the Russian American Kids Circus flip, fly and clown their way into Reichhold Center for the Arts on Saturday, October 14, 2006 at 8 p.m.
“The Russian American Kids Circus is a great way to open Reichhold Center’s new Family Series,” says Pamela Sanes, co-interim director of the Reichhold Center. “It’s an opportunity for parents and children to see a top-rated performance together.”
In keeping with the traditional Russian style circus, this show includes no animals. Instead, it features young entertainers ages 6-16, trained by world renowned Russian acrobat and juggler Alex Berenchtein, along with Igor Loktev, another veteran of the Russian Circus.
One of the Circus’ many amazing acts features a child acrobat executing a handstand on the handlebars of a moving bicycle. The excitement builds as the young performers juggle balls while bicycling and unicycling across the stage.
Their performance takes a daring turn when, arms outstretched, a young acrobat delicately walks down a rope hanging vertically from the rafters.
The lighting on the stage includes a dazzling array of blues, reds, yellows and greens.
Husband and wife team, Alex and Regina Berenchtein along with Regina’s mother, Olga Partigul, started the program as the New Way Circus in 1994 in New York City. The performance was later renamed the Russian American Kids Circus.
Members of the circus participate in community service projects by performing at children’s hospital, homeless shelters and senior citizen nursing homes. In this environment, the youngsters learn teamwork, self-discipline, positive self-esteem, and hard work.
The Russian American Kids Circus has received numerous awards and recognitions, including proclamations from the City of New York for Educational and Cultural achievements.
The circus has entertained legions of families for more than 12 years, with performances in Walt Disney’s Millennium Celebrate at Epcot Center, Central Park’s SummerStage in New York City and with appearances on the Bill Cosby show.
The Russian American Kids Circus visit to Reichhold Center is sponsored by First Bank, First Insurance, Marriott Frenchman’s Reef Resort, Tropical Shipping and the Virgin Islands Council for the arts.
Tickets are available at Modern Music, Parrot Fish, UVI Bookstore, V.I. Bridal & Tuxedo and the Reichhold Center Box Office at 693-1559.
