From England to Africa, throughout the Caribbean and United States, Morgan Heritage has established themselves as the premiere roots and reggae group of the 21st century. Morgan Heritage performs at Reichhold Center for the Arts on Saturday, March 31, 2007 at 8 p.m.
Ranging in age from 29 to 34, Mr. Mojo, Lukes, Peter, Gramps and Una show what a generation, raised within the heart of roots, rock and reggae, can produce when mixed with passion and inspiration. The premiere reggae group consider as inspirations H.I.M Haile Selassie 1st, as well as their father Denroy Morgan, Bob Marley, Tupac Shakur, Run DMC and Tuna Turner.
From birth in Bushwick, Brooklyn, N.Y., to youthful days in Springfield, Massachusetts, the Morgan children grew up playing music with their father. In 1990, the Morgan clan left the United States for St. Thomas, Jamaica, where they continue to live.
Morgan Heritage’s blend of social consciousness with beats anyone can groove to makes the group stand out among reggae giants. But for the Morgan siblings, music is more than just words to a beat; music tells stories.
“I’m Coming Home” features a husband telling his wife that everything will be all right when he comes home after a long stay away. On the single “Brooklyn & Jamaica,” Morgan Heritage encourages listeners not to ask them about Beverly Hills or Miami Beach; instead ask about the streets of Brooklyn or Jamaica.
The Jackson Fives of reggae released more than 10 studio albums and various live recordings, including 2002’s “Live at the London Astoria” and 2006’s “Live: Another Rockaz Moment,” filmed in Amsterdam.
In 1997 the family released “Protect Us Jah,” thought off as their first real reggae sounds. Two years later, Morgan Heritage released their mega-hit album “Don’t Haffi Dread” with the title track of the same name and hit songs “Freedom,” “Reggae Bring Back Love” and “Earthquake.” Morgan Heritage returned with 2001’s “More Teachings,” with songs such as “Know Your Past,” “What We Need is Love” and “Down By the River.”
Morgan Heritage views their 2005 album as a journey. That journey produced acclaimed hits “Tell me how Come,” “Best Friend,” “Jah Comes First” and “I’m Coming Home.”
Morgan Heritage’s soon to be releases 2007 album “Mission In Progress” features songs “Mission In Progress,” “Brooklyn Jamaica,” “Luv U Right.”
Their latest single “Caribbean Party” from the 2007 album has Morgan Heritage summoning the world to the Caribbean with, “Come on come on every body, everything’s all right, the Caribbean’s having one big party, feel the vibe…. Calling Australia, calling England.” And now, they are calling the Virgin Islands.
Morgan Heritage is currently taking their music across North America with “Another Rockaz Moment” tour.
Morgan Heritage’s appearance at Reichhold Center is sponsored by First Bank, First Insurance, Marriott Frenchman’s Reef Resort, Tropical Shipping, and the Virgin Islands Council for the Arts.
Tickets are available at Modern Music, Parrot Fish, Urban Threadz, UVI Bookstore, V.I. Bridal & Tuxedo and the Reichhold Center Box Office at 693-1559.
