One man! Two wives! One man! Two lives!
It’s all-out hilarity when the Reichhold Center for the Arts’ Caribbean Repertory Theater presents “Run For Your Wife,” based on the British hit comedy by Ray Cooney. The play runs June 15-18, 22-25 and 29- July 2 at the University of the Virgin Islands Little Theater.
Playwright Felix Fleming (“Queen Coziah,” “The Island”) has adapted and directs the British comedy to reflect the St. Thomas region and culture.
The play deals with a house of cards that comes crashing down around a St. Thomas taxi driver, John Smith, (Dwight Browne) who is married to two women; Mary (Bridget R. Hodge) and Barbara (Almaria Powell) at the same time. One wife lives in Red Hook, the other in Bordeaux. Neither wife knows about the other's existence.
John is able to keep his wives unaware of his duplicity through a tightly crafted schedule. For three years he has successfully kept his two marriages separate and secret from each other, spending mornings with Barbara and evenings with Mary.
John’s scheme begins to unravel when he is injured intervening in a mugging of an old lady. The incident and his treatment at a local hospital throw John's meticulously crafted schedule off-base. His life of lies is complicated when the police return him to the wrong home at the wrong time.
Things take a comic turn when John’s upstairs neighbor, Stanley Gardner, tries to help, but makes matters worse.
Things are no better for John when his picture appears in the local paper and another police officer shows up to investigate how two men named John Smith with different addresses were both mugged on the same day.
“Run for Your Wife” was written by Ray Cooney, recognized as the “master of farce.” The play enjoyed a nine-year run at various theatres in London’s West End and was included in the British National Theatre’s NT2000 list of significant plays of the 20th century.
The Reichhold Caribbean Repertory Theater was founded in 1994 by Felix Fleming and David Edgecombe.
The theatre brings together powerhouse actors and directors from across the community.
The “Run For Your Wife” cast include Seymour Davis, Tavis Dewindt, Dawuud Nyamekey and Lael Lettsome. Hodge and Powell appeared in Fleming’s “Queen Coziah.”
Tickets for “Run For Your Wife” are $20 and $15 for students. Tickets are available at Modern Music (Nisky and Havensight), Parrot Fish Records, V.I. Bridal and Tuxedo, the UVI bookstore, and the Reichhold Center box office at 693-1559.
